- Only humans live in this world.
- The planet has many small continents separated by narrow seas. Most continents are divided between several nations.
- There is a global religion that is roughly equivalent to the Roman Catholic Church.
- The northwesternmost continent is X-shaped and covered in fjords. This continent is sparsely inhabited and not claimed by any nation. Religious authorities are trying to establish a sanitorium there. People who wish to travel there go by steam ferry. One ferry got into a conflict when its docking space on a populated continent was stolen by an illegal fishing boat.
- Although the inhabitants have discovered steam power, they also have magic.
- Literacy is near-universal and the general knowledge level is quite high. Easy travel between the continents allows information to spread rapidly.
- People have "classes" like in an MMORPG. The "gods" act like MMORPG developers and maintain "balance" among the classes by altering the fundamental laws of the world.
- Classes are represented by a rectangular grid of circles, one circle per class. Divinations regarding the nature of and balance between classes are performed by drawing symbols overlaying the grid, similar to Hermetic magic.
- The gods have not changed the balance between classes for centuries. The global religion preaches that this is because the class system is now perfect and there is no need for any more change. Most people accept this explanation and have grown complacent.
- A villainous faction has discovered an overpowered class exploit and intends to use it to take over the world.
